A Day In A Life Of A Firefighter

January 27, 2010 - 1:21 pm 6 Comments

It’s been a busy week for me, quite stressed out that I may need acne scar creams since  I’m experiencing a skin break out at the moment. Anyway, I get to see a glimpse of a day in a life of a firefighter last Saturday. The company I worked for , organised a training conducted by The Fire & Rescue Department, Jalan Lintas, Kolombong onFire Prevention & Safety in Building.

It started with a talk on Fire Science by the State Director himself, and boy did he captivate all of our attention! He was the Training Director before, so it’s no wonder he have the ability to keep us all alert all throughout the 1 hour talk session. After a short break, it was then followed by a talk on fire drill by one of the senior officers. A  demo on the usage of  fire  extinguisher came next before lunch, ensuring the participants to know how to use the fire extinguishers to put out fire.

After lunch, all the activities that followed was done outdoor. The activities gave the participants a feel on the equipments used by Fire & Rescue Department. There were five fire fighting clothing/uniforms for our staff to use, to feel how sweaty they can be wearing the safety uniforms and also the weight of it! We get to test the fire hoses,  experienced the water pressure that came out from them and some were lucky enough to get on the stairs crane on the fire engine - and see the surrounding view of the are from up above..

The water pressure from the hose can reached up to 7 bar!

Someone was up there….

I really wanted to get on the crane, but too bad the weather didn’t permit me to and it was almost time for the course to be over anyway. I hope I’ll get a chance to do that next time, but meanwhile, I’ve got a brand new perspective and respect for the fire fighters. They’re putting their lives into danger when they’re working on putting out the fire, so it is best to prevent it from happening, for there is no winning situation when a fire becomes the master and the fire fighters have to come in and do their part.

It’s all start from each of us. Remember to unplug all the electrical appliances from the socket, or at least switch it off when it is not in use. Oh, I know a few of my friends that has this habit of leaving the phone charger on the socket, with the power on, even when they’re not charging their phones! Prevention is better than cure, and there is no cure in case of fire. Be safe everybody.
